Conversations with Hon. Fiame Naomi Mata’afa - 11 June 2019
The Hon Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, Samoa’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Natural Resources and the Environment, was the distinguished guest speaker at the Women’s Leadership Initiative’s inaugural Pacific networking breakfast, held in Melbourne on 11 June 2019.
Hon Fiame was accompanied to the event by Mr Ulu Bismark Crawley, CEO of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment.
More than 50 guests braved the winter morning to attend the breakfast in the Melbourne CBD. They were rewarded by a candid ‘question and answer’ session with Hon Fiame, facilitated by Women’s Leadership Initiative Program Manager, Nicolette Solomon.
In addition to sharing her own story and insights as a woman leader in Samoa, Hon Fiame also shared her thoughts on topics that included:
- the role of temporary special measures (reserved seats) in promoting women’s political participation in Samoa and the Pacific;
- the need for women to support other women;
- the role and contribution of development partners in Samoa; and
- the challenges of multitasking.
Hon Fiame offered advice to younger women aspiring to enter politics before staying on to socialise with scholars and other guests over informal networking.
